SUNY NEW PALTZ GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS SHOW 2017
Shitpissfuckcuntcocksuckermotherfuckertits // Madison Weisman
Shitpissfuckcuntcocksuckermotherfuckertits is a typographic exploration of profanities and censorship. Profanities are everywhere. Hard as we try to block, mask, and ignore their existence, they are here to stay. In 1972, George Carlin performed a stand up comedy routine in Milwaukee called The Seven Dirty Words You Can Never Say on Television. This performance sparked conversations about the nature, context, and censorship of profanities, and it was from this that I found my list of words. With a love for typography and an affinity for patterns, I started creating these pieces as a way of describing how profanities are woven and blended into society; to show that they are here, whether we like them or not. These words cannot be separated from our lives because language itself cannot be separated from our lives. A word is just a word, it is people who give them their meaning and their power to offend.
