For the Love of Maple // Taylor Birchmore

For the Love of Maple is an exploration into the concept of tradition within the realm of maple syrup production. The purpose of this project is to educate consumers of the rich history behind the industry, and explain exactly what goes into every ounce of 100% pure maple syrup. I chose to interview eight maple producers in the upstate New York and Southern Vermont regions on the topic of tradition and what the craft means to them. As a result, I created a book of the interviews in their own words, along with photographs of the producers and their sugar houses. To accompany the book and enhance the experience further, I hand lettered and foil stamped three whimsical, yet educational note cards with simple sayings and factual information. Together, the book and the cards create a realistic perception of the industry, and allow a transparent look into a world that is commonly overlooked.
